Spotlight: Dial-in Outperforms Premium SMS

In the
December '07 issue of the International Journal of Mobile Marketing, Dennis Becker,
CEO of CommerceTel compares and contrasts the accessibility and functionality of
Premium Short Message Service (SMS) with that of Toll Free Interactive Voice Response
(IVR). The article highlights IVR as the better of the two.
Becker
cites the successful boom in the interactive audience participation arena,
"TV game shows are generating millions of dollars
in new revenues via trivia and other 'skill' contests. NBC's 'Deal or No Deal -
Lucky Case' game has generated millions of interactions in its first season."
This success however, is somewhat limited by the
shortcomings of premium SMS.
"The success and buzz generated by premium SMS
text message campaigns has failed to illuminate the severe short comings of premium
SMS messaging as a means to facilitate and bill for audience participation. There's
no denying that, when reviewing the data from American Idol, possibly the most successful
audience participation franchise of all time, that SMS text messaging pales in comparison
to what a phone number based dial-in campaign would produce.
"With American Idol, it's ten to one; 500 million
dial-in votes compared to 50 million text votes. A phone call is simpler to execute
and easier to understand than text messaging and the results of American Idol prove
that. With millions of dollars in revenue being generated via participation TV campaigns
via text messaging, millions more are being lost due to the downside of using premium
SMS messaging as the call-to-action."
The shortcomings of premium SMS include limitations
associated with: revenue scope, revenue margins, market reach, billing reach, scope
of interaction, reliability and portability. IVR technology, however, is able to
overcome all of these limitations to provide the best experience for both the consumer
and the marketer.

CommerceTel Success
Stories
At CommerceTel,
our goal is to help you connect with your consumers in a fun and engaging way.
Below, you'll learn how we teamed up with National Public Radio to create a
unique service offering for their listeners.
NPR Reaches its Listeners with Multichannel Flexibility
In 2007, one of our most notable campaigns was with National Public Radio. Their
goal was to create multiple access points for reaching their listeners. We helped them achieve this by developing
a few unique services.
We set up NPR Mobile Voice which allows listeners to dial any of 20 local phone
numbers to hear top news stories; within that service we also enabled direct dial
connections to existing NPR membership phone lines, and for some stations the ability
to process mobile credit card transactions directly from the phone via voice prompts.
We also
set up all of the click to call IVR audio on NPR Mobile Web, allowing listeners
to access audio of local and national news via any web enabled mobile phone. The
best part- it's free for users!
"We
tested the CommerceTel Call For™ platform and found it to be a unique solution
for us to provide another way for the public to access NPR and NPR Member programming
whenever and wherever they want to use it," said Michael Yoch, Senior Business Development
Manager, NPR.
Our goal is always to provide our clients with the most innovative and convenient
service possible. We were happy to work with NPR to create a campaign that not only
benefited them, but their listeners as well.
